Returning a rental car late in Switzerland: what actually happens

If you realise you are not going to make it back in time, the answer is almost always the same: extend the rental before it ends. Extending carries no late fee and no handling fee, it re-prices your booking at the new total duration, and if that total reaches a discount tier the discount applies to the whole rental rather than only to the days you added.

The fees this article covers are not the price of being late. They are the price of never turning an overrun into an extension.

Why the return time matters at all is not arbitrary. Our cars are handed over keyless: there is no counter to absorb a delay and nobody in between to smooth it out. One booking ends where the next one begins. Run half an hour over and you are not moving an appointment of ours, you are moving one belonging to the person standing in front of an empty parking space. That is what the fees are sized against — and it is exactly why an extension made in time triggers none of them.

Extending is the normal case, not the exception

We assume people come back on time, and most do. Traffic, a meeting that runs long and a delayed flight into Zurich are real anyway, and that is what the extension is for. It is not a special case and not a request someone reviews and turns down because they dislike the reason.

You start it from your running rental at draiv.ch/rentals or in the app, and you see the price before you confirm. Up to three extensions per booking are possible, at most seven days each, and the only condition is that the car is free for that time. If a follow-up booking is in the way it will not go through, and then the honest answer is to bring the car back.

An extension re-prices your whole booking

This is the part that works differently from what people expect, and it is the reason extending is not punished.

The obvious way to build it would be to price the added days as their own small rental. That would make them expensive, because short rentals always cost more per day than long ones. We do the opposite: your booking is valued once at the original duration and once at the new total, and you pay the difference.

The difference shows up as soon as a discount tier falls. Someone who booked two days and extends to three gets the three-day tier applied to all three days, not only to the third. The conditions you already booked stay with you too. A promo code or a tier that applied when you booked also applies to the extension, even if the promotion has since ended.

The usual service fee applies to the added time, the same one every booking carries. There is no separate fee for extending.

Extend before the end, not after

Here sits the most expensive difference in the whole process, and it hangs on a couple of minutes of attention.

Request the extension while the rental is running and you pay the normal price. Request it once your rental period has already ended and a surcharge of 20 percent is added to the extension price. A day at CHF 100 becomes CHF 120, for the same time in the same car.

And the surcharge does not replace the late fees, it is added to them: whatever accrued under clause 4.3 between the end of your booking and the extension remains owed (clause 4.7(c)).

How far apart the three paths sit shows up when the same situation is priced three ways. A car at CHF 100 per day, you are 90 minutes past your return time, and a follow-up booking is on the car.

Without a follow-up booking the third row reads more gently — pro-rata rental plus CHF 25 handling instead of a per-minute rate. But which of the two cases applies is not yours to choose: it depends on whether someone is waiting for the car, and from where you sit you cannot see that.

The practical rule that follows is simple: the moment an extension is worth the most is before your booking ends. After that, every option costs more, whichever one you pick.

What applies when nothing happens at all

If the car is not returned on time and no extension was made, the fee rules in the terms apply, and they know two cases. Which one you land in is decided not by how many minutes you are late but by whether someone is waiting for the car.

No follow-up booking. The rental period extends at the pro-rata daily rate, plus a flat handling fee of CHF 25.

Follow-up booking. After a grace period of 15 minutes, CHF 2.50 per commenced minute applies, capped at CHF 200 per 24 hour period.

The reason for the difference does not sit with us but with the next renter, standing in front of a parking space with no car in it while their own plan slips. The fee is sized to them. That is also why the per-minute charge is so steep at the start: in those first minutes the next booking can still be saved.

Your damage waiver does not switch off at 18:00

This is the part most people expect to work the other way around, and it works in your favour. The damage waiver tier you selected at booking continues to apply during a late return. It does not expire the second your booked time does.

It falls away only in two situations, neither of which is traffic: you refuse to return the vehicle, or the vehicle has been reported stolen or misappropriated. The compulsory motor liability cover that every vehicle on the platform must carry sits with the vehicle, not with your booking window.

None of that touches the fees, which remain owed. But you do not need to drive badly on a country road because you believe every scratch after 18:00 lands on you in full. It does not.

There is still a reason to tell us, and it lives at that other boundary. Someone unreachable for hours with a car that has not come back is drifting toward what the terms call refusal to return. That carries CHF 400, and there the damage waiver genuinely does fall away. A message is the difference between a delay and a vehicle nobody can locate.

If something will not go through, write to us

Sometimes the extension is blocked because another renter is waiting, and sometimes something else gets in the way. Then a short message while the rental is still running is the right move. If nobody is waiting for the car, we resolve short delays without bureaucracy and we write to you with what we did. That is not an entitlement; what is owed remains what the terms say.

Renters who say nothing at all do not get that, and it is not a principle so much as physics: a car we hear nothing about is indistinguishable from a car that is not coming back. We answer daily from 07:00 to 24:00 on +41 77 456 99 05.

Two things to sort before you hand the car back

Both cost more than half an hour of lateness, and both get handled on the same drive. A combustion car comes back with a full tank, otherwise fuel is charged at CHF 2.50 per litre plus CHF 25 handling. An electric car comes back at least at the charge level its listing asks for.

Kilometres also keep running while you are out longer. The standard allowance is 250 km per rental day, and beyond that CHF 0.50 per kilometre. An extension extends your kilometre allowance too; quietly overrunning does not.

If you spot new damage while returning the car, report it in the app. That applies whether or not you were on time. What you owe afterwards is capped by the deductible you chose, which we cover in renting without a deposit or a credit card, and anyone who crossed a border will want taking a rental car abroad.
