Fleet telematics is the combined use of telecommunications and informatics to monitor, control and manage commercial or shared vehicle fleets. By collecting data on location, speed, fuel use and diagnostics, telematics helps operators plan routes, improve safety and reduce running costs.
How Fleet Telematics Works
Traditionally, a device in the car connects to the onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) port or is wired into the CAN bus. It captures data such as GPS position, engine health and charge or fuel level and sends it over the cellular network to a cloud platform. Many newer cars provide similar data without any added device, through the manufacturer's connected-car interface. Fleet managers review the data in a dashboard.
