Deductible in Damage Protection (Selbstbehalt)

Definition of the car rental deductible (excess): how self-participation caps maximum financial liability in case of vehicle damage or collision.

A deductible (also referred to as excess or self-participation) is the maximum financial amount a renter agrees to pay out of pocket toward covered vehicle damages or loss during a rental before platform damage protection absorbs the remaining costs.

How Deductibles Work in Car Rental

When booking a rental vehicle, damage protection terms establish clear financial boundaries:

  • Collision & Theft Protection: If an accident causes CHF 4,500 in bodywork repairs and the chosen deductible tier is CHF 1,000, the renter pays up to CHF 1,000, while protection coverage pays the remaining CHF 3,500.
  • Tiered Protection Options: Operators typically offer multiple deductible levels:
    • Standard Protection: Higher deductible (e.g., CHF 1,500–2,000) included in the baseline rental rate.
    • Reduced Deductible: Lower deductible (e.g., CHF 500) for a modest daily fee.
    • Zero Deductible: Complete peace of mind where liability drops to CHF 0 for covered events.

Deductible vs. Security Deposit

Renters frequently confuse the deductible with the security deposit:

  • Deductible: The legal liability ceiling in an actual accident or collision.
  • Security Deposit: The funds temporarily authorized or blocked on a payment card at pickup.

Consumer Protection and Exclusions

Standard deductibles apply to accidental body and collision damages. However, willful misconduct, driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, or gross negligence (such as misfueling diesel into a petrol tank) typically void protection caps under Swiss law.
