CAN Bus Vehicle Interface

The Controller Area Network (CAN bus) is a robust, standardized automotive communications bus that allows vehicle microcontrollers and electronic control units (ECUs)—such as the engine control module, central locking system, and instrument cluster—to exchange real-time data without a host computer.

How the CAN Bus Works

Developed by Bosch in the 1980s, the CAN bus uses a twisted pair of copper wires (CAN-High and CAN-Low) transmitting differential voltage signals:

  • Message-Based Broadcasting: ECUs broadcast packets containing an identifier and data payload across the entire network. Every receiver decides independently whether to process the message.
  • Noise Immunity & Reliability: Differential signaling suppresses electromagnetic interference from ignition coils and electric drivetrains, making it ultra-reliable in harsh automotive environments.

The Role of CAN Bus in Connected Mobility

For keyless car sharing and digital fleet operators, CAN bus integration is essential for remote commands and telemetry:

  • Remote Lock & Unlock: Telematics modules send authentic lock/unlock signals directly to the body control module, opening doors seamlessly without needing physical keys.
  • Immobilizer Management: Systems can electronically prevent starter motor engagement until a legitimate renter validates their booking in the mobile app.
  • High-Fidelity Telemetry: Operators read precise fuel tank levels, odometer readings, tire pressures, battery charge percentages, and door-ajar sensors directly from factory sensors.

CAN Bus vs. Diagnostic OBD-II

While the OBD-II port provides diagnostic trouble codes via periodic queries, tapping the underlying CAN bus grants access to high-frequency sensor traffic and bidirectional actuators essential for keyless vehicle platforms.
