OBD-II Telematics (On-Board Diagnostics)

OBD-II telematics refers to hardware devices that plug directly into a vehicle's standardized On-Board Diagnostics port (OBD-II), extracting real-time vehicle telemetry—such as odometer readings, fuel or battery charge status, diagnostic trouble codes, and engine runtime—and transmitting the data wirelessly to cloud platforms.

Technical Background

The OBD-II interface has been mandatory on passenger cars manufactured in North America since 1996 and in Europe since 2001 (EOBD). Originally designed for emissions testing and service diagnostics, modern mobility operators use the standardized 16-pin port as an installation bridge for telematics hardware.

Data Captured via OBD-II

A connected OBD-II dongle monitors key operational indicators:

  • Odometer & Mileage: Eliminates manual odometer logging at vehicle return by capturing accurate mileage down to the meter.

OBD-II vs. Hardwired CAN-Bus Telematics

While plug-and-play OBD dongles allow rapid fleet onboarding in under 5 minutes without wire tapping, enterprise car sharing fleets often prefer deeper CAN-bus hardwiring to access door locking actuators, window modules, and factory immobilizers directly.
